PACCAR Parts Europe (PPE), a sister company of DAF Trucks, is responsible for supplying truck parts to all DAF Trucks dealers across Europe. To achieve this, PPE operates a sophisticated supply chain network throughout Europe. Currently, PPE is developing a Supply Chain Control Tower—a platform that provides full transparency of all logistical movements from supplier to dealer.

Recently, PPE took significant steps toward achieving comprehensive visibility in their supply chain. The initial step involved mapping out transport routes and assessing carrier performance from distribution centers to dealers. While the system to generate these insights was technically implemented with the help of an external service provider, PPE also needed a tool to visualise carrier performance through intuitive dashboards.

PPE sought our assistance to visualise the transport process using Tableau dashboards, integrate the data into their existing systems, and create a comprehensive solution.

Approach

To address PPE’s needs, we collaborated closely with the Logistics Innovation and Operations Support department, specifically joining forces with the Reporting & Analytics team. Our goal was to develop a set of five dashboards in Tableau that would display crucial performance metrics, tracking each package from a high-level overview down to the individual package details.

Here’s how we approached it:

Forming the structure: We worked with the AWS team to design the structure of the dashboards, discussing how to organise the data effectively. This ensured real-time updates and a consolidated view of all parts in transit.

Defining requirements: We conducted detailed discussions with stakeholders from the Transport department to refine their rough requirements into essential, actionable needs.

Connecting data sources: We identified and integrated all necessary data fields to provide comprehensive insights. This involved translating end-user metrics into calculations and graphs, clarifying terms like: delivery timelines, delays, reasons for delays and carrier performance.

Designing the dashboards: We created comprehensive dashboards in Tableau that started with a high-level overview of logistics operations and allowed users to drill down to the performance of individual packages. These dashboards enabled stakeholders to monitor performance effectively and make data-driven decisions.

Continuous feedback: Through iterative demo sessions with end users, primarily the Transportation team, we gathered continuous feedback and made necessary adjustments. This collaborative process ensured the dashboards met user needs effectively.

Result

The dashboards are now live and actively used by PPE’s end users, giving them handy and valuable insights and feedback on their carrier’s performance. Prior to this solution, users relied on Excel spreadsheets and signals from the dealers or carriers for insights. Now, they benefit from:

  • Improved visibility of the supply chain to monitor and evaluate the delivery process.
  • Ability to dynamically analyse and zoom into details of the carrier’s performance them selves.
  • A reliable method to evaluate carrier performance.
  • A single, centralised source of truth.

Overall, this solution supports PPE’s strategic goal of achieving comprehensive supply chain visibility: operations can be streamlined and the overall efficiency and reliability of their logistics network is improved.

Future

Looking ahead, PPE plans to become much more data-driven. They want to integrate more data and expand the capabilities of dashboards. In this way, PPE wants to further optimise supply chain management and operational efficiency.

In addition, they wanted to collect at least 1 year of historical data for UA360's sunset. This allowed Wehkamp to compare the data in UA360 and in GA4. A key desire was to migrate the measurements as-is.
