join for joy

Join for Joy is a non-profit organisation dedicated to quality education, gender equality, and the physical and mental health of children in rural areas of East Africa. Through sports and play activities, the organisation motivates children to attend and stay in school. Important social topics such as malaria and HIV/AIDS prevention, child marriages, menstruation, and the importance of education are addressed in a playful manner.

Through De Nieuwe Gevers, Join for Joy sought support with a GDPR audit to gain a more up-to-date understanding of what the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) means for them. They wanted to identify areas for improvement in their operations and on their website. Our Data Privacy Lead was happy to assist them through the Digital Power Datahub, where we provided our expertise on a pro bono basis.

Approach

We started with an introductory session to clarify their needs and determine where we could add the most value. Our privacy expert then analysed the website and privacy statement, focusing specifically on:

  • The technical and organisational data collection and processing activities.
  • How privacy tools such as the privacy statement and cookie banner are implemented.

Based on this analysis, we created a comprehensive advisory report with concrete improvement points and practical recommendations.

To raise awareness within the organisation, we conducted an interactive GDPR training. The training included:

  • General GDPR information and privacy basics.
  • Relevant privacy principles and legislation tailored to the non-profit sector in East Africa.
  • Space for discussion on privacy issues within Join for Joy.
  • Practical tips and solutions to implement immediately.

Results

Join for Joy took immediate steps toward improved privacy compliance:

  • They are revising their privacy statement based on our advice.
  • They researched which Consent Management Platform is best suited and will integrate it into their website.
  • They improved the processing of data for donors, volunteers, and employees.
  • Employees are now more aware of GDPR obligations and understand what is expected of them.

This collaboration has helped Join for Joy not only handle privacy issues more effectively but also establish a stronger foundation for a future where data is used carefully and securely.
