What does a position as a Data Analyst look like in practice? What kind of work do you do? And what skills do you need? Jelmer, a Data Analyst at Digital Power, tells us more about this in the 'From data to action' podcast! Listen to the podcast or read it in the article below.

How did you end up in this field?

Jelmer explains that his study background has little to do with data: "I followed a bachelor's degree in General Social Sciences and then a master's degree in Middle Eastern Studies." It was only while following a traineeship that Jelmer really came into contact with data: "I followed a traineeship. This was focused on data and change management within the government, especially in a project leader role." During the traineeship, Jelmer noticed that he wanted to get started with data and started learning more about data in his spare time.

What are you currently doing as a Data Analyst?

"I now have a very broad role: I am involved in all areas of data analysis, from setting KPIs to delivering insights and translating these into actions," says Jelmer. Tools he uses for this are Google Data Studio and Power BI. Jelmer prefers Power BI because it gives him access to more advanced features in terms of visualisations.

Jelmer adds: “Dashboarding was the first thing I was involved in at Digital Power, and I still do this. I have a fairly broadly oriented role, and I am now, for example, also working on the implementation of Google Analytics 3 to Google Analytics 4. Other activities Jelmer does are:

  • Linking data sources and translating them into insights
  • Analysing marketing campaigns
  • Analysing and optimising online funnels
  • Stakeholder management

At Digital Power, we indicate that in addition to your assignment at the customer, you can also help build our organisation. Can you tell us more about that?

Jelmer has been involved in helping us build Digital Power from the very beginning. In the beginning, for example, he created marketing dashboards and is currently chairman of the works council: "We want to help the organisation with the works council. Especially because we entered a transition last year in which an MT was created."

Jelmer works 36 hours for the client and has four hours left in which he is busy with the works council and his own development: "The working weeks are hardly ever the same. I'm very happy with this because I like this dynamic in my life."

Where else can we see this dynamic?

Jelmer says: "Digital Power has multiple disciplines: Data Engineering, Data Analytics, Data Science, Technical Web Analytics and Customer Experience. However, these specialisations also often work together. Jelmer adds that within each discipline, there is a broad spectrum of activities, and it is not limited to only a few tasks. "And because I collaborate a lot with other specialisations, I have become much more broadly oriented and curious about work of other disciplines," says Jelmer.

What skills do you need as a Data Analyst at Digital Power?

According to Jelmer, these are the following characteristics: "The most important thing is that you have an affinity with data, want to continue to develop yourself and learn new things. In addition, you must have the will to help an organisation further itself."

In addition, a Data Analyst often needs SQL and tools related to data visualisation: "You also come across new tools, and you get to know them by following training courses or asking another consultant, who already knows the tool, for help: "Alone you go faster but together, you go further."

Why is working at Digital Power so much fun?

According to Jelmer, the following reasons apply: "The ways to develop here are endless, both in terms of hard and soft skills. This was decisive for me. In addition, we are a free organisation where everyone can contribute ideas, and constructive criticism is appreciated. The parties and social gatherings are great, and you can help build Digital Power, for example, by becoming a works council member."
